@ D2L (Desire2Learn)
I led an end-to-end concept testing study to evaluate the usability of the Brightspace Groups tool and test out new bulk import and export features. I gathered feedback from instructors and LMS administrators via semi-structured interviews and conceptual walkthroughs. Insights were synthesized into actionable recommendations and presented to stakeholders (e.g. product manager and designer) to inform prioritization and roadmap planning. I created the research plan, study session guide, recruitment materials, and final report for the findings and recommendations.
Bulk import and export are now publicly available as of the May 2025 and June 2025 Brightspace release highlights.
Purpose
To understand how the existing Brightspace Groups tool is currently used and concept test potential improvements, including new bulk import and export features.
Impact
This study was initiated in response to client feedback indicating that the existing Groups tool was not meeting user needs. Through research, I identified the root causes of key usability issues and helped the product designer and product manager better understand pain points from the perspective of instructors and LMS admins. The final report included actionable recommendations to reduce user confusion and supported the validation of design directions for future improvements to the tool.
Collaboration
I primarily collaborated with a product designer to ensure that the research plan and session guide aligned with their goals and questions. I also included feedback from the product manager to ensure that the findings can help with product decisions. The rest of the research team also provided feedback throughout the process (e.g. helping me with pilot testing the study).
Process: Data Collection & Analysis
Methodology
Data was collected via 60-minute sessions of semi-structured interviews followed by a think-aloud prototype testing. Data was analyzed qualitatively via affinity mapping.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted to better understand how the current tool is being utilized and why some clients are experiencing issues with its capabilities.
Participants were also shown a prototype to gauge whether the initial design meets expectations, addresses pain points, and add value to their current processes.
Interviews (n=11)
11 participants were recruited from client institutions. Recruitment was conducted via convenient sampling through client managers.
Data Analysis
Notes (i.e. participant quotes and researcher observations) from the interviews and usability testing segments of the session were analyzed via affinity mapping on Miro.
